Play Therapy at Wildflower

Kids don't always have the words. Play gives them another way to tell us.

When emotions feel too big or hard to explain, therapy gives children a way to be understood. At Wildflower Therapy & Wellness, we use play therapy to help kids share their feelings, work through challenges, and feel more confident in themselves.

Wildflower Therapy & Wellness offers play therapy for children [ages 3–12] at our office in downtown Plymouth, Michigan, and welcomes families from Canton, Northville, Livonia, Westland, and nearby communities.

What Is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a form of counseling designed for children. Instead of expecting kids to sit and talk about their feelings the way adults do, play therapy uses toys, art, games, and storytelling, the natural ways children communicate and make sense of the world.

In a play therapy session, a child might act out a story with figures, draw a picture, build something, or play a game with their therapist. These activities aren't just fun. They give the therapist insight into what a child is thinking and feeling, and they give the child a safe way to work through experiences they can't yet put into words.

Signs Your Child May Benefit From Play Therapy

As a parent, you know when something isn't quite right, even if you can't pinpoint why. Play therapy can help children who are dealing with:

  • Anxiety and worry, including fears, clinginess, or trouble separating from you

  • Big emotions like frequent meltdowns, anger, or tears that seem hard to manage

  • Behavior challenges at home or school

  • ADHD and difficulty with focus, impulse control, or frustration

  • Family changes such as divorce, a move, a new sibling, or the loss of a loved one

  • Difficult or traumatic experiences that still affect how your child feels or acts

Your child doesn't need a diagnosis to benefit. Sometimes a little extra support during a hard season makes a big difference.

How Play Therapy Helps

Through play, children can:

  • Express feelings they don't yet have words for

  • Process difficult experiences at a pace that feels safe

  • Learn coping skills for calming down and handling frustration

  • Build confidence and a stronger sense of self

  • Practice problem-solving and healthier ways of relating to others

What to Expect

First, we meet with you. The first appointment is usually with parents or caregivers, so we can learn about your child's history, your concerns, and your goals.

Then, your child comes to play. Sessions take place in a welcoming playroom filled with toys, art supplies, and games chosen to help kids feel comfortable and open up naturally. Most children look forward to coming.

You stay involved. We check in with you regularly, share what we're seeing, and offer practical strategies to support your child's progress at home. You're an important part of the process.
